How should we store research data in future, in order to facilitate later reuse? Currently, Germany is in the process of establishing a national research data infrastructure (NFDI), a cloud infrastructure for research data management, and our goal as team 'NFDI' is to contribute the perspective of young physicist to this process, how such an infrastructure could look like and how it can be integrated within teaching at university.

Science is always advancing. However, valuable research data is often only stored locally and temporarily, so it is not accessible to the entire scientific community or is even lost over time. This is why a digital and networked knowledge repository has been created: the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), a cloud with the goal of archiving the growing volume of research data digitally, managing it, ensuring the quality and reusability of this data and making it available to the scientific community under license.

The NFDI is structured as a non-profit cooperation of up to 30 consortia of all scientific fields. These currently include cultural, social and engineering sciences as well as medicine, biology and chemistry. The four consortia DAPHNE, PUNCH4NFDI, FAIRMAT and NFDI4Phys apply for areas of physics.

In general, they are expected to manage and make available the data of their scientific focus. Their networking within the NFDI should guarantee the compatibility of the archives and systems of all consortia. In autumn 2019, calls for proposals for the funding of the consortia were launched, with funding being partly provided by the federal and state governments. After submission, the applications will be reviewed by an expert committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and approved by the Joint Science Conference (GWK).

One topic that cuts across the consortia is how the handling of data should be taught during the course of studies. The Conference of the Physics Departments (KFP) is the mouthpiece for the universities to discuss, for example, the integration of data management into teaching. The DPG takes on the role of a mediator between consortia related to physics and serves as a platform for exchange and networking.

At the general meeting of the jDPG 2019, our A-Team NFDI was founded on the initiative of Benjamin Wolba. In workshops, articles or events we want to inform about NFDI and address the interests of young physicists in particular. We cooperate closely with the Zusammenkunft aller Physik-Fachschaften e.V.
