Description

"New Paradigms for the Heliosphere"

29. June - 3. July 2015, Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany
After almost 40 years of continued operation the Voyager 1 spacecraft has crossed the outermost boundary of the heliosphere, i.e. the so-called heliopause that separates the solar from the interstellar plasma. Rather than concluding an impressive journey through the solar system this event marks the beginning of a new phase of exploration, namely the in situ exploration of the interstellar medium -- Voyager 1 is the first true `astrophysical' spacecraft: the most distant object that mankind has sent away from Earth to the outermost frontier of in situ exploration. In view of the recent in situ measurements by Voyager 1 and 2 as well as the remote observations made with the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) established heliospheric paradigms are under revision. The proposed international workshop will bring together the leading experts on observations, models, and theory of the outer heliosphere and of the local interstellar medium to critically review the standard scnearios and, if necessary, to define new paradigms.
