598th WEH Seminar "Frontiers in Scanning Probe Microscopy"
As electronic devices are rapidly shrinking towards the atomic scale, the need for characterization of materials at that ultimate length scale is becoming ever more important. This WEH workshop, entitled "Frontiers in Scanning Probe Microscopy" will focus on the basic science and application of scanning probe techniques to tackle some of those exciting tasks. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has evolved from a pure imaging tool to a spectroscopic tool that combines high spatial with high energy and temporal resolution. Increasingly, we see it employed to study atomically assembled nanostructures as well as custom tailored molecules on surfaces. Inelastic spectroscopy and spin-polarized STM also enable studying magnetic properties. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) performed with functionalized tips has in recent years achieved unprecedented spatial resolution. It can nowadays image atomic bonds inside molecules and provide maps of their electrostatic potential. Finally, magnetic specimen can be investigated with atomic resolution by detecting the short-ranged magnetic exchange interaction. We will discuss the most recent advances in the techniques, such as improvements in the time and energy resolution for STM and the additional information available with specifically functionalized tips for AFM. We will also put a lot of emphasis on exploring beautiful recent applications of these techniques to the exploration of nanoscale systems.

This WEH workshop will bring together experts in the field - as exemplified by the impressive list of invited speakers - with students and postdocs for lively discussions with ample time for personal interaction. All non-invited participants are strongly encouraged to prepare a poster - the organizers consider the poster sessions to be the most important aspect of this meeting and will strongly encourage all invited speakers to actively engage in poster discussions.

The workshop will take place in Physikzentrum Bad Honnef (Germany) from 2nd-5th of November 2015. The topics of the meeting will include:

Nanoscale Superconductivity and Majorana Fermions
Single Spins, Spin Frustration and non-collinear Magnetism
SPM on Insulating Substrates
High Resolution Imaging with Functionalized Tips

Accommodation and meals will be provided by the "Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Stiftung". WEH

The total number of participants will be limited to 50.
