Aims and Purposes of the Seminar

In this seminar, we wish to study the electronic transport properties of various systems which show characteristic, partly drastic deviations from classical Drude behavior. We will focus on geometrical aspects, interaction effects, or a combination of both, and their consequences on electronic transport at low temperatures. Roughly speaking, three topics will be presented:
(1) point contacts
[e.g. transport through quantum dots or through organic molecules, new experimental techniques (AFM, 4-point measurements)]

(2) one-dimensional systems
[Luttinger liquids, quantum wires, spin chains, carbon nanotubes; e.g. effect of impurities, shot noise, Kondo effect]

(3) surfaces, interfaces
[e.g. d-wave superconductors near surfaces, Kondo impurities in high-temperature superconductors, superconductor/semiconductor-antidot interfaces, electrons on He surfaces, vortices]

During the seminar, lively discussions between participants - about topics ranging from basic questions of quantum transport to aspects of technological applications - will be strongly encouraged. Ample time will be reserved for a poster presentation, to which every participant is invited to contribute.
