251. WE-Heraeus-Seminar

Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, 05-08 March 2001

The conductivity of materials with atomic dimensions is a challenge both in experiment and theory. True 2D metallic conductivity measurements have recently been made in systems with a thickness of one or just a few monolayers. So far, two different systems have proved successfully: surface state bands of superstructures on silicon show a metallic conductivity and ultrathin epitaxial metal monolayers show metallic and non-metallic features. The conductivity in these systems depends strongly on geometry, temperature, and structure, and in particular on structural defects. The conduction mechanism of surface state bands and of ultrathin films is essentially unknown. Although many interesting features of conductivity, magnetoconductivity, quantum size effect, Hall effect, localization and superconductivity are seen in experiment, available models often do not describe the results appropriately.

The objective of this workshop is for experimentalists and theoreticians to meet and discuss the state of the art in this research area. A focus of the workshop will be to compare and contrast the properties of surface state bands and metal monolayers, so that appropriate models may be developed.

In the workshop there will be about 20 invited talks, and about 60 participants are expected, who will all have the possibility to also contribute in posters or short talks. Ample time for discussion is provided.

The Physikzentrum Bad Honnef is close to Bonn, Germany, in the Rhine valley and easily reached via the airport Cologne/Bonn.
