Symposium zu Wissenschaft und Diplomatie am 24. April 2023
Die moderne Wissenschaft, insbesondere die Physik, basiert zunehmend auf internationaler Zusammenarbeit. Erst im 21. Jahrhundert ist der Begriff der „science diplomacy“ (Wissenschaftsdiplomatie) zu einem gängigen Begriff für diesen inhärent internationalen Charakter der modernen Wissenschaft geworden. Was aber meinen wir, wenn wir von „science diplomacy“ sprechen? Woher kommt sie? Wie können uns die Wissenschaftsgeschichte und Wissenschaftsforschung helfen, ihr Wesen zu verstehen? Welche Missverständnisse können bei diesem Konzept auftreten? Und wie sollten wir uns als Physiker heute in der „science diplomacy“ engagieren, wenn wir ihre Möglichkeiten, Fallstricke und Probleme kennen?

International Seminar on Material Culture
The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation will be funding the V. International Seminar "Material Culture in the History of Physics". There is a theoretical section, and an attendance section, which will take place from 26th February to 3rd March 2023 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. There the students will learn how to work with historical instruments in the environment of the museum. Accommodation will be funded as well as travel expenses up to 80€ for participants from Germany, up to 300 € for students from Europe, and up to 1000€ for students from overseas. The seminar is intended for Master students and PhD students in the History of Science, and Physics, and Didactics of Physics, but we would also like to encourage trainees in science museums to apply for participation. Christian Forstner 1975-2022
Mit großem Bedauern geben wir den völlig unerwarteten Tod von Christian Forstner am 13.07.2022 bekannt. Als langjähriger Vorsitzender unseres Fachverbandes hat er sich sehr für die Stärkung und Vernetzung der Physikgeschichte verdient gemacht. Wir verlieren nicht nur einen hochgeschätzten Kollegen und ausgewiesenen Physikhistoriker, sondern auch einen unermüdlichen Unterstützer des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses.
Die Beisetzung fand am 24. Juli in seinem Wohnort Hohlstedt/Thüringen statt.
Das Physik Journal wird im Oktober einen Nachruf veröffentlichen.
Spring Meeting 2022: "Communicating Physics in History - Communicating Physics through its History"
Writing papers, gauging instruments, teaching at school or chatting over coffee: these are just a few ways in which physical knowledge is communicated, and many more exist today or have existed in the past. In the last decades research in the history, sociology and didactics of the sciences has investigated the communication of scientific knowledge, underscoring the relevance for the development of existing fields, the emergence of new ones and the shaping of scientists' identities and communities. These reflections also apply to the past and present of the physical sciences and the contributions to the conference are invited to reflect all aspects of this diversity.
We welcome contributions in English or German focusing on these or other aspects of Communicating Physics in and through its History.

Erklärung für starke Professuren in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte
Gemeinsam mit dem Arbeitskreis Astronomiegeschichte der Astronomischen Gesellschaft, der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie, der Fachgruppe Geschichte der Psychologie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie, der Fachgruppe Geschichte der Chemie der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker und der Fachsektion Geschichte der Mathematik der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung hat unser Fachverband eine Erklärung für starke Professuren in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte erarbeitet. Damit stellen sich alle historischen Fachgruppen der großen naturwissenschaftlichen Fachgesellschaften Deutschlands gegen eine Umwandlung bestehender wissenschaftshistorischer W2/W3-Professuren in W1-Professuren und betonen die Bedeutung und Erfolge des Fachs für disziplinübergreifende Projekte und eine kritische Reflexion der Naturwissenschaften in der modernen Gesellschaft.

Fourth International Seminar on the Material Culture in the History of Physics at the Deutsches Museum, Munich

There is a theoretical section, and an attendance section, which will take place from March 2nd to 6th 2020 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. There the students will learn how to work with historical instruments in the environment of the museum. Accomodation will be funded as well as 80€ travelcosts for students in Germany, and 300€ for students from abroad. The seminar is intended for Master students and PhD students in the History of Science, and Physics, and Didactics of Physics, but we would also like to encourage trainees in science museums to apply for participation. History for Physics
The Division for the History of Physics of the DPG supports a series of symposia organized by the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Vienna (IQOQI-Vienna) and the Research Group Historical Epistemology of the Final Theory Program of the MPIWG in Berlin. This Initiative aims at demonstrating the importance of the history of physics for current research in physics itself.
To forward this agenda, the core format will be that of tandem talks. Each tandem will pair two talks, one given by a physicist on a current research topic, the other given by a historian of physics providing the historical context to this topic. Every tandem will be followed by a discussion. In addition to the tandems, there will be a panel discussion on the role of the history of physics in both research and in academic structures.
