523. Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Seminar

The 523rd WE-Heraeus Seminar High harmonic spectroscopy is kindly funded by the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Foundation. It will be held from January 28 to February 1, 2013 in the Physikzentrum of the German Physical Society in Bad Honnef near Bonn and Cologne, Germany.

The interaction of intense short laser pulses with matter induces electron dynamics that leads to the generation of coherent extreme-ultraviolet radiation. This is the key to laser-based attosecond physics. Moreover, high-harmonic generation provides not only a light source. The electron recollision mechanism is a probe into the structure and dynamics of microscopic quantum systems. For example, the mapping from emission frequencies to electron excursion times has given insight into the formation of electron-hole wave packets in molecules on an attosecond time scale. Tomographic methods have exploited the wave character of the returning electron to provide Angström-resolution pictures of molecular orbitals. High harmonic spectroscopy denotes the general approach to extract structural and dynamical information from high-harmonic emission. Exploring its current applications and future perspectives will be the main purpose of the 523rd WE-Heraeus Seminar. The quantum mechanics of laser-atom and laser-molecule interactions is the underlying topic that must be addressed to understand and control the electron dynamics responsible for the above-mentioned phenomena. The seminar will bring together leading experts in the area of intense-laser-matter interactions ranging from basic theory to practical applications.

Young scientists are invited to submit applications for poster presentations. It is planned to select a small number of hot topic talks from the received abstracts. The conference language will be English.

Meals and accommodation at the Physikzentrum will be fully covered by the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Foundation for all participants (beverages not included). The day of arrival is Sunday, January 27 with a welcome supper at 6pm. The scientific programme will begin on Monday morning. Please note that the number of participants is limited.
