Description

Scope of the Seminar

Magnetic data storage is a key technology within information technology. A new development is magnetic random access memory with the potential to largely replace semiconductor memory. Intimately connected with the strong annual increase of the storage densities (presently 100% per year in hard disc data storage) is the demand for fast read/write and storage cell switching processes. Presently the time scales are already close to the intrinsic time scale (10-9 seconds) of the magnetic systems employed, defined by the time for a precession loop of the magnetization vector about the internal field direction. With the advance of shorter time scales, the fundamental dynamic processes demand for a deep physical understanding, in particular to make use of them in applications. These processes range from the femtosecond regime, where elementary magnetic quantum processes are important, to the nanosecond regime governed by switching processes of magnetic domains. Central problems are for example the properties of spin lattice interaction on short time scales, the physical understanding and the optimization of the damping processes, the switching properties of magnetic domains on short time scales, and strategies for fast magnetic switching of storage media and storage cells. It is evident that for the further technological development a thorough understanding of the fundamental processes is mandatory.
The seminar is devoted to fundamental dynamic magnetic phenomena, as well as applications. It covers the topics:

1) Magnetization dynamics in magnetic nanostructures (effects of precession in magnetic nanostructures, dynamics of domains, linear and nonlinear spin waves, fast magnetic switching)

2) Relaxation effects and dissipation in the GHz regime

3) Femtosecond spin dynamics

4) Spin injection in semiconductors

5) Applications

Choosing "Spin Dynamics" as a subject of a WE-Heraeus seminar, we hope to enable an overview of this area, to stimulate the scientific exchange between the participating groups and to make familiar the traditionally strong magnetic community in Germany with this new and exciting area.
