Soft Matter

The theoretical physicist Prof. Dr. Matthias Fuchs reported on his field of research and current discoveries of his research group in his lecture "Soft Matter: Einstein to Liquid Glass" on April 29, 2021.

Statistical physics studies the properties of the matter that surrounds us. Soft condensed matter is an umbrella term for systems in which fluctuations and molecular correlations play a major role. The lecture used the example of colloidal dispersions (i.e., small particles dissolved in a liquid) to discuss how Einstein and Perrin proved the existence of atoms, whether colloids swarm like birds, react as artificial molecules, and whether glass flows.
