Welcome to the Environmental Physics Division (UP)
Environmental Physics addresses various research topics within the Earth System Sciences utilizing physical methods, including subsystems such as air, soil, and water. |
Environmental Physics as a subdiscipline of physics deals with research questions such as fluxes of energy and matter in the environment, namely within the environmental systems such as water, soil, air, and ecosystems, as well as in between these systems (transfer processes at the boundaries).
The term physics therein points to the special methods used, in principle the point of view under which these problems are treated. One method of Environmental Physics is model building, which considers the system-like nature of the environment. (transl from: Bericht zum Arbeitstreffen "Umweltphysik", April 1997, Heidelberg).

News
- Spring meeting 2027: The next Spring Meeting will take place in Mainz (March 15–19, 2027). Further information will follow.
- Spring meeting 2026: Many thanks to all session chairs and participants who presented their work at the DPG Spring Meeting of the Condensed Matter Section in Dresden (March 9–11, 2026) and who actively participated in our general assembly!
We would especially like to thank the Divisions of Biological Physics, Chemical Physics and Polymer Physics, Physics Education, Physics of Socio-Economic Systems, as well as the Working Groups on Industry and Business, Physics of Modern Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, and the young DPG for planning and organizing the symposium “The sustainability challenge: A decade of change” and the panel discussion “Sustainability! And now?”.
A big thank you also goes to the Climate Working Group (AG Klima) for organizing session UP2 “Climate Communication.”
Thanks as well to all invited speakers, who enriched our sessions and contributed to the discussions!
