Walter Schottky Prize

The Walter Schottky Prize serves to honour an outstanding paper published in the last two years, preferably in the last year, in the field of solid state research by one or more young physicists . The award consists of prize money of 10,000 euros and a certificate. Since 2020, Infineon Technologies AG, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH and Robert Bosch GmbH have been sponsors of the prize and donate the prize money in equal shares (3,334 euros each). The prize was endowed by Siemens AG in 1972 and constituted by the DPG in 1992. From 2001 to 2010, the prize was supported by Siemens AG and Infineon Technologies AG and from 2012 to 2019 by Infineon Technologies AG and Robert Bosch GmbH.

Statutes of the Walter Schottky Prize for Solid State Research

  1. The German Physical Society (DPG) may award a Walter Schottky Prize for Solid State Research once a year. The Walter Schottky Prize is intended to honour an outstanding paper by one or more young physicists published in the last two years, preferably in the last year, in the field of solid state research.
  2. The prize consists of prize money of 10,000 euros and a certificate containing the award text and a short laudation. Infineon Technologies AG, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH and Robert Bosch GmbH are sponsors of the prize and donate equal parts of the prize money (3,334 euros each).
  3. The prize is awarded annually. The management of the DPG, in agreement with the prize committee, announces the prize in good time and sets a deadline for the submission of proposals. The nomination proposals, which are forwarded by the main office to the chair of the prize committee, must include a short laudation, a curriculum vitae and, if applicable, a list of publications as well as suggestions for reviewers in addition to a one to two page statement of the reasons for the nomination.
  4. The award is intended to honour a scientific achievement, which must be documented in the form of recently published papers. The work to be awarded should have been published in the last two years, preferably in the last year before the day of the proposal for the award. Exceptions to this rule are only possible in particularly justified cases; the Prize Committee shall decide on them.
The scientific work to be awarded must be accessible to the public. Publication shall be deemed to be the reprint or acceptance for reprint in a scientific journal. The Prize Committee shall decide on the recognition of other forms of publication. As a rule, the prize is awarded to one person at a time. If the prize is awarded to more than one person, they will receive the prize money jointly (in equal shares) and a certificate for each.
  5. A prize committee consisting of six persons shall be formed for the selection of the prize winners. Four committee members with voting rights are elected by the DPG Executive Board for a term of three years. Re-election is possible once. After retirement, re-election is possible at the earliest six years after retirement from the Award Committee.
In addition, the responsible DPG Executive Board member for Scientific Programmes and Prizes as well as the Chairperson of the Condensed Matter Section belong to the Prize Committee ex officio and without voting rights.
  6. The Prize Committee shall elect a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson from among its members with voting rights.
  7. The Awards Committee may adopt its own rules of procedure.
  8. The Award Committee shall meet at least once a year (on DPG Day) to discuss the proposals. The Prize Committee has a quorum if at least half of its members participate. The Committee shall make its selection by a simple majority of its members; in the event of a tie, the Chairperson shall have the casting vote. The Committee shall submit one or more award proposals to the DPG Executive Board, together with a statement of reasons and a laudation suitable for printing.
  9. The Award Committee may obtain (external) expert opinions on the submitted proposals and, in addition to the nominations received, may also consider other proposals, e.g. from the previous year.
  10. The DPG office supports the work of the prize committee.
  11. The DPG Executive Committee decides on the awarding of the prize.
  12. The awarding of the prize takes place at a conference of the DPG. A lecture by the prize winner should take place within the framework of the same conference or a more suitable conference of the DPG.
  13. These statutes were adopted by the DPG Executive Board on 10 November 2012 and can only be amended by the Executive Board.

Implementing Regulations for the Walter Schottky Prize

  1. For an award of the Walter Schottky Prize at a meeting of the Condensed Matter Section in spring (February/March/April) the following schedule is to be provided:
    1. Announcement in April of the preceding year, e.g. in the Physik Journal and/or on
    the DPG website.
    2. Deadline for submission of proposals in June of the preceding year,
    3. Meeting of the Award Committee and proposal to the Executive Board of the DPG on the DPG Day in November of the preceding year,
    4. Decision by the Executive Board of the DPG on the DPG Day in November of the preceding year.
  2. The prize may also be awarded to persons from (European) foreign countries and, if applicable, to persons from other disciplines than physics, if the work to be awarded is in the field of solid state research.
  3. As a rule, the prize should be awarded to young scientists.
  4. If an author, and in particular a proposed work, has already received an award from another source, a particularly strict standard should be applied to the award, since a work that has already received an award should not be awarded more than once.
