Patrick Raif - Board Member for Doctoral Studies
Patrick is doing a PhD in nanoscience in Basel. He is working on induced quantum dots using scanning multi-gate microscopy.

My first contact with the (j)DPG came through the “Abiturpreis” and the events organized by the regional group in Konstanz. Thanks to the free membership everyone can claim after completing a bachelor's degree, I rejoined the DPG at the beginning of my master's studies. Since then, I have been active in both the regional group in Konstanz and the working group for international affaires, and have participated in and contributed to various (j)DPG events.
Do you have a favorite jDPG event?
The jDPG offers a wide range of fantastic events. I particularly enjoyed the international events. MAFIHE 2022 in Münster inspired me to join the working group for international affairs and get involved in the jDPG outside of my regional group. My personal highlight was the GIPE 2024 in Konstanz.
Which particle are you and why?
An (electron) hole: Without other the electrons, I could not exist. I am always there when a vacancy is open, and besides, I am always positive.
What do you do besides physics?
I am a member of many different clubs and still have strong roots in my home village. A large part of my free time is devoted to music; I currently play the trumpet in three orchestras. Unfortunately, I don't get to do it often enough, but I love being in the mountains in both summer and winter. I also enjoy trying out new sports at university. However, my favorite sport is and always will be gymnastics.
