Nanoplus DFB lasers have proven to be able to cover a wide range of the infrared spectral region. They are suitable light sources for applications where smallest concentrations of several gases have to be traced via absorption spectroscopy. The unique concept of lateral coupling of a metal grating to the evanescent part of the guided mode in the laser ridge enables the selection of one longitudinal mode. Since this concept is independent from the epitaxial material it can be applied to various semiconductor systems like GaAs, InP or GaSb. This enables the coverage of a wide spectral region from 760 nm in the NIR up to beyond 6000 nm in the MIR where various absorption lines of organic and inorganic molecules are situated. Once an absorption line is selected the laser wavelength is scanned over this line and the concentration can be measured down to concentrations of parts per billion. The applications where TLAS is applied typically include industrial and environmental monitoring, medical applications as well as research and space applications.
