Since the first Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atomic gases was realized experimentally in 1995, the emerging research field of ultracold quantum gases has been extremely active and has expanded in many different directions. In particular, new areas of research are forming at the borderlines between atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and condensed matter physics.

Usually, this current rapid evolution in the field of ultracold quantum gases is not adequately reflected in standard curricula. Furthermore, the daily work of a PhD student in both theory and experiment is nowadays so specialized that a broad knowledge about the research field as a whole is generically lacking. In order to provide a common platform of understanding both theory and experiment in the field of ultracold quantum gases, we organize the international Bad Honnef Physics School “Degenerate Quantum Gases” for physics students. The main goal of the school is to provide a solid introduction to the field of ultracold quantum gases, which will be delivered by internationally recognized experts of the field. The School will cover the five topics Efimov physics, polarons, Fermi-Hubbard model, molecules, and tweezers, which represent a modern cross section of the field of degenerate quantum gases. Each topic will be discussed during the summer school by both an experimental and a theoretical invited speaker. Apart from invited talks the School will allow the participants to present their own contributions as posters in four presentation sessions.
