zum Inhalt:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way we use light for sensing and communication. From improving image quality to enabling faster data transmission, AI-driven methods are reshaping the capabilities of modern optical systems. At the same time, photonics provides a compelling platform for running AI models themselves, offering exceptional potential for ultrafast speed and low-power computation. In this talk, I will present our recent efforts at this emerging intersection. First, I will describe how a convolutional neural network can be used to measure ultrashort optical pulses, simplifying a task that typically demands complex equipment. Then, I will show how an optical cavity can be designed to function as a deep neural network, achieving information processing and data compression at the speed of light.

zur Person:

Hui Cao is the John C. Malone Professor of Applied Physics and a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at Yale University. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Peking University in 1990, a Master’s degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 1992, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 1997. Before joining Yale in 2008, she spent a decade on the faculty at Northwestern University. Cao’s research explores how light behaves in complex systems, with work spanning laser science, nanophotonics, and biophotonics. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
