In recent years enormous improvements have been achieved in the synthesis of nanoparticles using colloidal chemistry. This holds true for the number of materials synthesized, their quality in terms of crystallinity and monodispersity, their functionality and functionalization, the tunablility of size and shape control. Nowadays, it is feasible to prepare colloidal nanoparticles with a large variety of robust physical properties which results mainly from their large surface-to-volume ratio and/or from the quantum confinement of their electrons and holes, but also plasmonic effects and assembly play a big role. The development of such materials has led to a broad range and ever increasing number of applications amongst which are solar cells, LEDs, fuel cells, bio-imaging and bio-labeling, inexpensive transistors, sensors, catalysts and many more.

In this summer school the basics of the synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles, the resulting physical properties and their applications will be reviewed. A broad range of characterization techniques will be introduced by experts in the field which provides an ideal forum for Master and PhD students to become acquainted with the topic and to initiate further discussions.

The participants are expected to present their own work in the form of posters.
