Description

Scope:
The scientific field "ionizing radiation" plays an important role in medicine, industry, energy, environment, etc. as well as in politics, public, media, especially due to concerns about the effects of low doses, individual sensitivity, of nuclear power, radioactive repositories, optimisation of radiation therapy and diagnostics, etc. Adequate protection against adverse effects of ionizing radiation while making optimum use of its beneficial aspects is an important task of radiation protection.

This Physics School is funded by the WE-Heraeus Foundation and will provide a highest level comprehensive overview on the present status of knowledge, future perspectives of research as well as on the open questions of the interdisciplinary, highly up-to-date field of radiation protection during 80 lectures, tutorials, experimental trainings and seminars. The lecturers and advisors are very high level, world renown specialists in this interesting and important field.
Main topics

A) Basics in radiation physics, radiation biology and statistics
B) Basics in radioecology and radioepidemiology
C) Natural and anthropogenic radiation exposure
D) Radiation effects from various sources
E) Ionizing radiation in medicine
F) Practical aspects of radiation protection

This WE-Heraeus Physics School is intended for English speaking students, i.e. diploma and PhD students, as well as for postdocs in the field of physics, biophysics, etc. The purpose of the School is to draw the attention of prospective and newly graduated physicists, etc. to the latest developments in the topic "ionizing radiation and radiation protection". It will include ten days of intensive lecturing the aim of advancing students and scientists in a career of academic research in this field or in a high level profession in this broad interdisciplinary field.
