Gustav Magnus Medal

The Gustav Magnus Medal of the German Physical Society is awarded to a personality who, from another field of research or life, has promoted the connection to physics in an outstanding way and for the benefit of physics and society. The Gustav Magnus Medal is awarded as a special form of honorary membership.

Honour Commission

The Board of Directors sets up a commission to find and nominate candidates for honorary membership (as well as the special form Gustav Magnus Medal) or an honorary pin.

From the implementing provisions of the DPG statutes

Re § 11. honorary members paragraph 1.

In specially justified exceptional cases, the "Gustav Magnus Medal" of the German Physical Society may be awarded as a special form of honorary membership.

  1. The Gustav Magnus Medal of the German Physical Society is awarded to a person who, from another field of research or life, has promoted the connection to physics in an outstanding manner and for the benefit of physics and society.
  2. The Gustav Magnus Medal is awarded as a special form of honorary membership. The provisions of § 11 and § 22 5. of the statutes apply in full.
  3. Proposals for names will be accepted informally and in strict confidentiality at any time by the Chairman of the Honorary Commission.
  4.  The Gustav Magnus Medal is only awarded in specially justified cases. There is no fixed rhythm of awarding the medal. The ratio between the number of persons awarded the Gustav Magnus Medal and the number of DPG honorary members is to be kept small.
