Fellowships for early career physicists who live or work in SESAME countries (DPG Spring Meetings)

DPG Spring Meetings are regularly among the largest physics-conferences in Europe. In 2027, four DPG Spring Meetings will take place – each on different physical disciplines.

Thanks to the support of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation DPG offers fellowships for early career physicists who live and work at SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) member states and preferably coming from one of the SESAME member states to participate in these conferences.

Fellowship

The fellowships covers:

• The conference fee,
• costs for travel and accommodation - upon presentation of appropriate receipts and up to a maximum of € 1,400.00 and
• a daily lump sum of € 30.00 for up to 6 days.

Eligible are

• Early career physicists up to 8 years after obtaining their PhD,
• who are ready to contribute to one of the the DPG Spring Meetings (typically by presenting a poster or a talk of their work) and
• who work at SESAME and preferably coming from one of the SESAME member states.

Application

• Applications will be proceeded via SESAME. The link to the application form will be available shortly.
  We ask for personal data and an abstract of the work you intend to present at the Spring Meeting. Please add a letter of recommendation from your supervisor, your home institute or the leader of your working group.
• Deadline for application: 1st November 2026

Selection process

A jury of SESAME will assess the application and select up to 25 persons for a fellowship. All applicants will be informed by DPG until 18th November 2026.

Conference participation (Please note the opening times of the conference office!)

1. Check-in: At the conference office, you will be receiving your "Conference ID Card" – which has your arrival date printed on it – along with your name badge. Please keep this safe!
2. Check-out: At the last day of your stay, you need to let DPG confirm your departure date on the "Conference ID Card" with a DPG stamp in the conference office. It is the departure date that is important, not the time. You may still give and attend presentations even after receiving the stamp. Please keep the stamped section for your accounts.

Billing

Along with the funding notification, you will receive a link for the settlement and payment of the fellowship. Please use this link to submit the following information and documents by 2 April 2027 at the latest:

• Bank details for payment
• "Conference ID Card" with arrival and departure dates
• receipts of your travel tickets and hotel bills

Payment of the fellowships will be made – following prior notification by e-mail until the end of May 2027 at the latest, by bank transfer to the account you specified.

Please notice

• Fellowship-holders are requested to choose among the four DPG Spring Meetings the one which fits best their scientific activities.
• Fellowship-holders have to organise travel and accommodation by their own – DPG cannot assist in organising the trip.
• However, upon request DPG will provide the fellowship-holders with an invitation letter for visa purposes and also with a health-insurance for the time of the conference.
