Research Agenda: Our group is interested in fundamental properties and symmetries of electronic states and optical excitations in topological materials as well as their nanostructures. As a model system, we focus on van der Waals materials and their heterostructures, where the electronic symmetries can be engineered at the relevant atomic scales. We use a combination of optical and electronic spectroscopy techniques to probe light-matter dynamics and topological invariants, such as Berry phases or curvatures, in these systems.

Short Bio: I received my Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich (Germany) where I worked on ultrafast carrier dynamics in topological insulators. In 2015, I joined the Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA) to study the impact of atomic defects on the electronic and optical properties of 2D van der Waals semiconductors. At the Technical University of Munich, my group currently focuses on proximity interactions in van der Waals heterostructures within the DFG SPP 2244. Within the ERC starting grant 2DTopS, our group further explores approaches to create artifical, correlated quantum phases in 2D van der Waals materials using topw-down nanofabrication methods.
