Every time you attended a conference, you were looking for an introduction to a certain topic but never found it? You always wanted to organize your own session on a topic intriguing you for a long time? You wanted to share your insights in this topic with your colleagues?

If so, we are happy to be able to give you the opportunity to organise your own symposium (or focus session at SKM) at the DPG Spring Meetings in 2024!

Since 2012, PhD students have been organizing their own symposium within the Division of Magnetism and the Section AMOP with great success. The mixture of invited talks by both experienced and young researchers was particularly well appreciated. In particular, tutorial talks introducing people into "hot" research fields were enthusiastically received by the audience.

In 2024, there will be opportunities for PhD students to organize their own event on all Spring Meetings. In case of success, your meeting may even be upgraded from a Focus Session of your Division to a Symposium of the whole Section Condensed Matter!

If you now think you would like to organize such a symposium, but don't know how: don't worry, the experts of the working group "Young DPG" are happy to offer you their experience. Along the way, you will become familiar with the organizational issues of a scientific meeting with thousands of participants.

This is your chance to implement a Focus Session you always wanted to attend! In addition, it is a chance to get in personal contact with leading scientists in the field at an early stage of your career.

How to get started?

Just pick 1-5 colleagues - ideally from different institutes - to form the organization committee, and write a proposal. The symposium should be devoted to a timely topic related to the field of your division. The organization committee determines and invites the speakers, compiles the program, organizes the symposium day and chooses the chairpersons for their session. The symposium may include up to four invited talks.

Application

Please structure your application letter as follows:

  1. Title of the symposium, abstract
  2. Contact information, institutional affiliation, and academic status* of all organizers
  3. List of divisions that should co-host the symposium/focus session
  4. Motivation, discussion of scientific relevance of the proposed topic
  5. Draft of the program (usually 2-2.5h)
  6. Possible invited speakers. Please note that the Division Magnetism (MA) asks for at least 30% female speakers.

*e.g. Master's student, PhD student, etc.

Items 1-3 should be on a separate page. The proposal including figures and references should be no more than three pages in total. Please submit your application via email as a single PDF document.
