Job Opportunities Presentations 12.11.

If your studies are coming to an end, you might well be in the process of asking yourself what to do next? How to proceed, which path to follow in life?

Insights into the working life of Physicists

We invited several physicists to tell us their individual career path. They will share their most important experiences and pass on to you the wisdom they wish they’d had at the end of their studies, and ultimately explain how they ended up in the positions they hold today.

The lectures for the Wintersemester will be held in English on Tuesday afternoon at 6.00 pm and take place in KIP (INF 227) SR 3.403.

Schedule WS 2019/20

12.11.2019

Dr. Nils Trautmann (Corporate Research and Technology, Carl Zeiss AG, Oberkochen)

Nils Trautmann completed his PhD in physics at the Darmstadt University of Technology in 2017. During his PhD, he worked on topics in the field of theoretical quantum optics, in particular on the question how to couple single photons to single quantum emitters with maximum efficiency.

After his PhD, Nils Trautmann joined the semiconductor manufacturing branch of ZEISS in the department of strategic business development.

He is currently heading a team in the Corporate Research and Technology department of ZEISS, which is investigating the potential applications of the emerging Quantum Technologies of the second generation for ZEISS.

During his talk, he would like to discuss the various opportunities, spanning from business oriented roles to more research oriented positions, for physicists to work in industry.

19.11.2019

Dr. Armin Müller (Lidl Analytics, Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, Neckarsulm)

Armin Müller completed his diploma in Physics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. During his diploma thesis, he analyzed self-assembled semiconductor nano crystals with AFMs. He completed a BSc in Mathematics and holds a PhD in Statistics.

In 2012, Armin Müller started his professional career at McKinsey & Co., Inc. as consultant with a strong focus on Advanced Analytics. In 2019 he joined Lidl, where he currently helps to build an Analytics Division aiming to spread Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence throughout the whole company.

During his talk he would like to discuss opportunities for physicists in the exciting world of Machine Learning and Data Science.

Schedule SS 2019

There are no talks planned for this semester. The next talks will take place in the Wintersemester.

If you are interested in the talks feel free organize a speaker for a talk.

Schedule WS 2018/19

20.11.2018

Dr. Jakob Kunz (IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH, Obersulm)
Dr. Kunz did his PhD at the Insitute of Environmental Physics at Heidelberg University in the Jähne Lab. There, he studied heat transfer processes at the air-water interface and was working on the development and improvement of camera based optical measurement systems. After half a year as a PostDoc in Heidelberg, he joined IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH.

The talk will be especially interesting for those who are interested in cameras and image processing.

27.11.2018

Dr. Matteo Maturi, Dr. Christian Angrick and Dr. Martin Feix (Bartelmann Cosmology Group - Institute for theoretical Astrophysics - Heidelberg University)
Dr. Angrick and Dr. Feix started their scientific careers studying physics in Heidelberg, following postdoctoral years of astrophysical resarch at several european universities. As members of the Cosmology group lead by Prof. Bartelmann they work on developing novel approaches to the X-ray properties of galaxy clusters and the role of dark matter in cosmic structure growth as well as alternative theories of gravity and their imprints on observations. After finishing his PHD in Padova, Heidelberg and a postdoc position in Munich, Dr. Maturi joins the group focussing on the research of dark energy by observing and analysing galaxy clusters. The Bartelmann Cosmology group has made major contributions in the field of theoretical research of large scale structure development and the dark universe and has an important role teaching in theoretical physics. All speakers aim to give a comprehensive insight on the work and the everyday life of a professional researcher.

11.12.

Dr. Jens Buchner, Dr. Sebastian Boblest, Dr. Andrej Junginger (ETAS GmbH – Bosch Group, Stuttgart)
Dr. Buchner studied Physics and received his PhD from Heidelberg University in environmental physics (Prof. Roth) in 2012. He started at ETAS GmbH in 2013 in the field of real-time simulation as a developer and team-leader.
Dr. Junginger studied Physics and received his PhD from the University of Stuttgart in the field of quantum reaction dynamics. Supported by the Humboldt foundation, he worked as a PostDoc at the Georgia Institute of Technology and lead a research group on time-dependent reaction dynamics at the University of Stuttgart, before he joined ETAS GmbH in 2017.
Dr. Boblest also studied Physics and received his PhD from Stuttgart University in the field of theoretical atomic physics. After being a PostDoc for 4 more years in Stuttgart, he started at ETAS GmbH beginning of 2018.
Currently all three work in the machine learning/artificial intelligence team at ETAS GmbH. ETAS GmbH is a mid-size company providing software tools and hardware for engineering embedded devices in the automotive domain. You will get an insight to the dynamically evolving field of machine learning in the automotive industry, focusing on deep learning (image-to-image translation with GANs and adversarial attacks) and learning of equations with genetic programming.
