One driving scheme of PLANCKS 2022 will be to focus more on the carbon footprint and climate impact of the in-person event. With Prof. Dr. Sibylle Günter, we were able to secure a renowned theoretical physicist who works a potentially game changing energy source – nuclear fusion. She is not only the youngest women appointed director of any Max-Planck Institute (IPP), but also Scientific Director of the tokamak reactor Wendelstein 7-X. Her very distinguished research in theoretical tokamak physics has been acknowledged with Bavarian Order of merit and the Order of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. On top, she was appointed as member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina last year. We are truly looking forward to her keynote on latest theoretical innovations and discoveries in plasma physics!

 

Adriana Pálffy-Buß

We are also very pleased to announce Dr. Adriana Pálffy-Buß, a young PI (principal investigator) and rising star as our guest speaker! She is working on the interface between atomic and nuclear physics observing quantum dynamics by high energy X-ray quantum optics. Nuclear excitations can be used to store and control single X-ray photons - showing the way towards shrinking computing elements in photonic quantum devices in the future. In 2019, she was awarded the Hertha Sponer Prize. Currently she holds a Heisenberg Fellowship at the University of Erlangen. We are excited to listen to her keynote on novel theoretical innovations and discoveries in atomic and nuclear quantum dynamics!

We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Ignacio Cirac as one of our keynote speakers. He is certainly among the most impactful researchers in modern theoretical quantum physics. His field of expertise ranges from quantum many-body physics, quantum optics over atomic physics to quantum information. To give a few examples: he pioneered the generation of Mott insulators via optical lattices, and trapped ion quantum computation together with Peter Zoller. His recent research focus includes the tensor network description of quantum states. So far, his excellent research was recognised by admission into the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Wolf Award and the Max-Planck-Medal, the highest theory award of the German Physical Society. We are looking forward to his exciting lecture at PLANCKS22!

 

Reinhard Genzel

With Prof. Dr. Reinhard Genzel, we have won a Nobel laureate as a speaker for PLANCKS 2022. As the director of the Max Planck Institute of Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching/Munich he dedicates his scientific work to astrophysical topics. He was awarded the 2020's Nobel Price in Physics, together with Andrea Ghez and Roger Penrose "for the discovery of a super-massive compact object at the center of our galaxy", of which we know today that it is a black hole. We can't await to listen to his certainly astronomical and inspiring keynote at PLANCKS 2022!
