WORKSHOP

Arrival information:

By train:

From Cologne take the train to Koblenz, then exit at the stop "Rhöndorf".

From Frankfurt either via Siegburg (ICE) to Troisdorf and then to Rhöndorf (right side of the Rhine) or via Koblenz and then to Rhöndorf (often cheaper with the same journey time).

It is a 10 minute walk to the Physikzentrum or take bus 566 to the stop "Meßbeuel".

From Bonn take the tram line 66 to the stop "Am Spitzenbach", which is a 5 minute walk from the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef.

By plane:

Cologne-Bonn Airport

An underground train station is located in the airport between the two terminal buildings. The journey by train to Rhöndorf takes 32 minutes with the (hourly) direct connection.

Frankfurt Airport

By train (ICE) to Siegburg. From Siegburg you can reach Bad Honnef/Rhöndorf either by train or tram. From Siegburg take the Deutsche Bahn (direction Cologne) to Troisdorf and then the Deutsche Bahn (direction Koblenz) to Bad Honnef/Rhöndorf (right side of the Rhine). Alternatively, you can take the tram line 66 from Siegburg to the stop "Am Spitzenbach". The journey takes about one hour. Or take the train via Koblenz to Bad Honnef/Rhöndorf. This route is often cheaper despite the same journey tim

About the venue:

The Physikzentrum Bad Honnef is a beautiful 19th century castle in the Bonn/Cologne area surrounded by the Siebengebirge close to the
Rhine river.

Workshop: Topological Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Hall Physics

We are pleased to announce the workshop "Topological Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Hall Physics", organized by the transregional Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 183. This workshop is aimed at Master and PhD students as well as young postdoctoral researchers. More senior scientists are also welcome to apply.

Scope:

The discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect several decades ago marked the beginning of the 'topological age' of condensed matter physics. As of today this area of research is overwhelmingly deep and broad, ranging from abstract mathematics to the most desired practical applications as e.g., topological quantum computation. This workshop aims to provide a modern overview of the field. In particular, the workshop
will focus on different descriptions for the fractional quantum Hall effect, including Chern-Simons theories and the conformal field theory (CFT) approach. Complementary, the theory of non-chiral topological order (Tuarev-Viro state sum constructions) and, on
a more abstract and general level, the theory of topological excitations in 2D (anyons) will be presented. Last but not least, the workshop will introduce basic concepts as well as recent results in topological quantum computation.

Invited speakers:

Maissam Barkeshli (University of Maryland)

Maria Hermanns (Nordita Stockholm)

Tobias Meng (Technical University Dresden)

General information:

The workshop will comprise two and half days of lectures, taking place in Bad Honnef, Germany from June 13 to 16, 2019. The scientific program starts on Friday morning and ends at Sunday around lunch time.

The CRC will take care of all local costs (including meals), but will not cover travel expenses.
