654. WE-Heraeus-Seminar: Topical Insights into Nanoscience using Scanning Probes

This workshop on scanning probe techniques and their application in nanoscience will take place at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from 19 to 23 November 2017. This seminar is generously funded by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation. The scientific organizers are Sarah Burke, Jens Wiebe, and Benjamin W. Heinrich.

A list of confirmed speakers can be found here.

Free board and lodging is supplied by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation for all participants. Information on how to apply can be found here.

Scope of the workshop

With a fascinating rapidity, scanning probe techniques developed over the last years the capability to investigate and manipulate electronic and magnetic, optical and chemical properties of nanoscale systems and thereby contribute to diverse fields of experimental physics. With the seminar on Topical Insights into Nanoscience using Scanning Probes, we would like to provide a forum for young scientists to discuss the latest technological developments as well as their applications to contemporary problems in physics. In particular, we focus on the technical advances in the field, on nanoelectronics and nanomagnetism, on the application to molecular systems and their AFM–based investigations, on the combination of magnetism and superconductivity, and on topological materials.

The workshop shall provide an overview over the field as well as insights into state-of-the-art experiments and related theory developments, and give an opportunity for graduate students and PostDocs at the beginning of their scientific career to get in touch and discuss with successful young researchers. 26 national and international speakers from different fields of scanning probes, who contributed to the fast developments in the field over the last three years, will present introductory lectures as well as talks about their exciting recent results. In addition, poster sessions will give the participants the possibility to present and discuss their work with more experienced researchers.
