PhD Position in Theoretical Physics
Theme: we wish to understand better the collective or statistical properties of systems with a very large number of degrees of freedom out of thermal equilibrium. Simple examples of such a system would be growth or branching processes, as they arise in various contexts, -- evolutive systems, cascades of elementary particles in cosmic rays or biological systems.... It is found that for sufficiently long times, the physical observables follow an universal distribution law, that is their properties only depend on very few parameters of the system under study. The universal form of these distributions allows classifying the temporal evolution of such systems. Furthermore, we shall be interested in how the systems approaches these limit distributions.
The methods to be used will include probabilistic techniques, analogies with reaction-diffusion systems and with physical ageing.
Environment: the thesis will be prepared within the Statistical Physics Group of the new Jean Lamour Institute in Nancy (France). Our group is very much nationally and internationally connected (French-german doctoral school, many scientific exchange programmes with several partners, with the possibility of prolonged visits abroad) and we encourage our members to create and maintain a dense tissue of scientific connections. Our PhD students are actively encouraged to participate in conferences and schools.
Formation: a master’s degree is required; in the field of theoretical physics (an orientation in statistical mechanics is preferred). Knowledge of field-theory will be useful. French can be learned while preparing the thesis. A thesis in statistical physics opens entries to many different careers, either in research or in industry (of which the financial sector is just one of the choices of our previous PhD students).
